The Writings of 2 Kings

The stories of Israel continue to be told in this book.  The nation of Israel is known for its kings and political leaders.  But it is also known for its spiritual leaders, people who were called prophets.  This book tells the stories of both kings and prophets. 

Two important prophets who stories are told are Elijah and Elisha.  The first prophet is Elijah who is then followed by Elisha.  These two prophets are used by God to speak to the nation of Israel about their sin, their opportunity to repent and God’s desire to build Israel as a nation that worships Him.

Israel is building itself as a nation but it is surrounded by other nations.  These other nations will be an influence on Israel.  They will bring their gods, such as Baal, into Israel, trying to persuade Israel to worship false gods.  God knew this would be a challenge to Israel so the author of 2 Kings chooses stories that teach Israel how they need to be pure and separate from other nations.

Israel does not follow the prophets.  They are wrongly influenced by other nations and follow other gods.  They engage in a civil war and are separated as a nation. One kingdom is conquered and eventually ends, never to return.  The other Israel kingdom is capture and taken into captivity.

God records the stories of Israel for lessons even today.  There is no hope and future for people who do not follow God.  People are surrounded by influence all around them.  Much of this influence is not from God.  If you allow this influence in your life you will begin to make choices separate from God. These choices will result in your life no longer honoring God.  This book teaches important stories for all people, centuries ago and even today.
