The Writings of Proverbs

Everyday, people make stupid choices.  Everyday they make guesses, not having access to wisdom and experience to correctly guide their decision-making.  The smartest man on the planet at that time was a man named Solomon. He saw that people desperately needed practical wisdom for daily life.  He determined that he would help to write a book on wisdom.  This book called Proverbs would stand apart from any other book of the Bible.

Solomon, and the other writers who contributed their wise proverbs to this book, wanted the book to be practical, even memorable.  So they wrote in a style that would make the proverbs easy to understand and easy to remember.  They wrote simple poetry.  They wrote clear statements.  They wrote their advice in short sentences.  They wrote about people.  They wrote about everyday life experiences and choices every person, no matter where they live and what they do, faces daily.

With the inspiration of God’s Spirit, they compiled the world’s greatest collection of wisdom.  Proverbs is practical advice for daily living.  No topic is left untouched.  No area of life is considered too private or too sensitive to discuss.  Everything was addressed.

These wise sayings, each called a proverb, covers so much of life, that from them the nature of God can also be discovered. All true wisdom comes from God.  God is interested in every aspect of life.  He has wisdom for living on money, relationships, work, nature, hardship, conflict, happiness, time management and so much more.  God cares so much for people that He doesn’t leave them on their own to figure out life. He gives His wisdom.  Much of God’s wisdom for living comes in the form of this book that Solomon wrote, called Proverbs.

What would you do if the smartest man in the world, with a direct communication line to God, wrote and collected the wisest points of advice for life? Would you be interested in reading what the smartest man in the world, directed by God, might say about how to manage your money or your time?  Would you be interested in what the smartest man in the world would say about how to have the best relationships?  Or what if he knew, from personal experience, what to stay away from in life.  Would you be interested in knowing what he had already learned?

Solomon’s hope was that everyone would read and even memorize these proverbs.  At the very least, he wanted people to read them daily and let the proverbs guide all decisions to be made.  One book of the Bible, Proverbs, should be accessed almost everyday, because this one book of the Bible is given by God for everyday decisions.

Proverbs can be read the way it was written.  One simple proverb at a time.  Each proverb has wisdom and truth for life.  Read it and consider how God is giving you the best advice through it for your life.  What decision you have to make is addressed by the proverb?  It doesn’t matter how fast you read Proverbs.  What matters is that you apply each precious wisdom from God so you can live the life He has designed for you.
