The Writings of Song of Solomon

Love is central to the identity of God.  God uses various authors and various ways to tell of His love for people.  Marriage is central to how the Bible communicates God’s love.  But marriage is more than an institution.  Marriage is even more than a covenant.  Within marriage, in the relationship between a man and a woman, exists the deepest intimacy known on earth.

This one book of the Bible portrays that deep intimacy in the most personal of ways.  Song of Solomon is a poetic piece of literature.  If you were God how would you convey how deep your love is for people?  Since the fall love has been stained by selfishness and immorality but love, in its many dimensions, is part of the nature of God.

Song of Solomon can be read on two levels. It is a picture of the love of a man and a woman.  It is full of intimate portrayals of love that is emotional and physical.   Love involves the entire person. Song of Solomon can also be read on a metaphorical level. It is a picture of our love with God. 

Song of Solomon, as one of the 66 books of the Bible, challenges its reader to be true and transparent with God’s love.  Sin has stained love to such a degree that some who read Song of Solomon feel embarrassed. Most pastors do not teach from Song of Solomon.  But to not read this book is to miss out on a deeper, intimate understanding of God’s love for you.

Read it as if God is reading it to you.  Read it as if God wrote it just for you.  Read it to discover the depth of the love God has for you.
