The Writings of 2 Timothy

Are you afraid to die? Often people people talk about death they are scared, or if they are nearing death they look back at their life with regret. In 2 Timothy the apostle Paul gives us a glimpse of how someone who has committed their life to Jesus and knows Him as their Savior should approach death. Paul writes this letter from a dark prison cell, waiting for his execution. He knows the end of his life is approaching, and he has a few last words he wants to say to his spiritual son, Timothy. Think of this as a father, calling his son to his deathbed. The son takes his father’s hand in his own, and hangs on to every word his father speaks, because he knows this is the last time he will have a chance to listen to him here on earth. This is what Paul was doing for Timothy. Paul was under a lot of pressure knowing his execution was approaching. That is what makes this letter even more special. We get to see his true character come out in this letter.

Paul’s character is one of prayer and encouragement. Even in his final days, Paul still wanted to make a difference in the life of others. He couldn’t do as much as he had in the past because he was bound in chains, but he could send a letter of encouragement. He also shares practical wisdom. Paul has learned much throughout his ministry and he wants to share with Timothy what he has learned.

Paul passes on to Timothy the responsibility of the church. What must Timothy have been feeling as he read Paul’s charge? Was he sad that his spiritual father wasn’t going to be with him much longer? Did he feel honored that Paul would entrust him? Was he scared because he knew how much Paul had suffered for the sake of Christ, and wondered if he would suffer too? 

Paul knew Timothy would be feeling these emotions so he makes sure to end his letter in comfort and hope. Just as Paul had lived a full life serving God, Paul wants Timothy to do the same. He tells Timothy that he has fought the good fight, he finished what God has called him to do, and that his faith was not shaken. Paul isn’t just writing to Timothy however. He’s writing to every Christian. Paul knew many Christians beyond Timothy would read his letter and gain an eternal perspective for life on earth.
