The Writings of 3 John

Most of the 66 books of the Bible are written to large audiences. This third letter of John was written as a personal letter between two people. John wrote to his generous, caring and passionate friend Gaius. Gaius was full of faith, strong in the Spirit and his Christian character stood out. He was a true Christian who gave all he had to the Lord’s work. He shared his wealth and abilities because he believed that all he possessed belonged to Jesus. His daily life showed that he had a personal relationship with Jesus and knew Jesus as the way. 

Gaius always showed friendly hospitality to preachers and teachers as they came to town. There was another church official called Diotrephes, however, who did not show the same type of hospitality as Gaius. John writes a personal letter to a close friend, commending him and warning him not to be influenced by Diotrephes. As you read this book, consider the life of Gaius and Diotrephes. Do you see, one is helping the cause of Christ and the other is hurting the same cause? As Christians we need to choose which person we are going to be like? We can be like Diotrephes and be disobedient to Jesus’ example and live selfishly. Or we can choose to follow the example and influence of Gaius. He willingly gave his money, time and abilities to shine the love of Christ brightly, while he helped to build God’s Kingdom. As you read this book reflect on your daily life. Are you truthful, kind, loving and generous? When you do this God will reward and bless you.
